Paintings and Woodcarvings
As a wildlife research biologist for the past 40 years, I am intrigued by every creature of the natural world -- from bears to butterflies. Since childhood, the countless hours I have spent observing and studying a diversity of wildlife in their natural environment have informed and inspired my artistic expression.
My goal as an artist is to capture for my audience through realistic detail not only the physical authenticity of my subject in its surroundings, but also its essence -- that which truly inspires me. I hope you enjoy my portraits, painted or carved, as much as I have enjoyed observing and working with these fascinating creatures.
Soapstone Sculptures
While stationed in Labrador in 1963, I was exposed to Eskimo soapstone carvings and became intrigued by the simplicity and primitive beauty of their craftsmanship. Returning to the U.S., I began to create soapstone sculptures inspired by these artisans, and have especially enjoyed bringing to life the mammals of the Arctic, such as walruses, seals, whales, muskoxen, and polar bears.
